François Charles

It is with deep sadness that we have learned that François passed away on April 9, 2007, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. He was only 39 years old.

François graduated from the University Paris VI in May 1993. His PhD work was supervised by Witek Krasny, with whom he participated in the very first F2 proton structure function extraction in the H1 experiment at HERA.

After his thesis he worked as an engineer at the International Space University in Strasbourg. In 1996 he was appointed Assistant Professor at Mulhouse University where he pursued his research work in the CMS experiment. He co-supervised 5 PhD students in CMS, and his interest focused on B Physics, SUSY and standard model Higgs searches. Also he took part in the development of MSGCs and other gazeous detectors, foreseen for the CMS tracker. He has been a collaborator in D0 since 2001 within the Strasbourg group. He supervised Anne-Catherine Le Bihan's PhD work and co-supervised Jean-Laurent Agram's PhD work. He received a full Professorship in 2005. François was our colleague, but he was first of all our friend and we deeply miss him.
