Seymour Margulies

Seymour (Sy) Margulies
In Memoriam
October, 1933 - May, 1995

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

Sy graduated from Cooper Union with an engineering degree.
He did his graduate work under Hans Frauenfelder at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he
received a Ph.D. in Physics in 1962. Before coming to
the University of Illinois at Chicago, Sy did postdoctoral
research in Heidelberg, Germany and at Columbia University's
Nevis Laboratory. While in Heidelberg he translated three
volumes of Pauli's lecture notes. He was Professor of Physics
at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1965 to 1995.

Sy was an extraordinary teacher. His lectures were organized
and logical and beautiful to behold. The figures he drew on
the blackboard, looked like ones you would see printed in a
textbook. His students respected and liked him so much that
he was given many Silver Circle Teaching Awards. The faculty
recognized his talents by granting him a University Excellence
in Teaching Award.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Sy's most recent research projects included a series of fixed
target experiments at Fermilab (E557,E672; deputy spokesman)
and the Tevatron collider experiment, D0. Sy was a consummate
experimental physicist. He had enormous skills in logical
thinking and communication. All the papers from his fixed
target work were edited by him. However, his greatest talent
was the development and construction of new experimental
equipment. On D0, Sy was one of the primary movers behind
the scintillating fiber tracking project.

The Margulies Award for undergraduate students has been
established at the University of Illinois at Chicago
in his honor.
