Richard P. Smith

                               In Memoriam

                             Richard P. Smith

                      January 31, 1943 - July 11, 2006

Rich Smith died Tuesday July 11th after two and a half years of a
courageous struggle with cancer.

Rich joined the Research Division at Fermilab in 1983 after working
eleven years at Argonne where he was involved in high energy physics and the
development of superconducting magnets. Before joining the D0 Department he
was Associate Head of Research Services and Head of the Research Division
Cryogenics Department at Fermilab. He came to D0 in 1986 and worked on the
R&D, design and construction of the LAr detectors, especially the production
of the signal and readout boards for the 50,000 calorimeter channels. In 1992
Rich became the Project Physicist for the 2T D0 superconducting solenoid. He
led the conceptual design effort, the procurement, testing, installation and
the field mapping of the magnet. He continued his involvement in D0 while
accepting the challenging responsibility for development of the field mapping
apparatus for the CMS 4T solenoid and he carried out preliminary studies for a
5T linear collider superconducting solenoid.

All who worked with Rich appreciated his understanding of physics
and engineering and his sense of responsibility to others and to the
Laboratory's physics goals. His friendship, dedication and ability to solve
problems will be missed.
