Minutes of the Fermilab/Dzero group meeting April, 27, 1998 ------------------------------------------- 1) Changes to the masthead There were 56/61 responses to the survey, a response very much appreciated by the ib reps. As a result Seung Ahn, Dan Green, Nancy Grossman, Michael Tartaglia, Zhou Yongshen and John Hobbs were removed from the masthead, and Don Lincoln was added. There are two request for addition to the masthead by Mike Martens and Linda Stutte. 2) At the recent IB meetings the admission procedure for senior colleagues and the criteria for limited authorship were approved; Saclay, IN2P3, Kansas State University and the University of Washington were admitted; The University of Kansas was accepted as full member, as opposed to provisional, based on increasing time commitment from its people. Discussions continue with regard to NIKHEF. The committee on authorship rules feels little need for change. 3) There is a call for nominations for a new deputy IB chair. Nominations should be sent to Wyatt and Marcel by noon Friday, May 8. (see also previous mailing) 4) The term of the Fermilab IB reps is two years and Marcel's term is up, so a call is out for nominations for a Fermilab ib rep. Nominations should be sent to Wyatt by noon Monday, May 4. The procedure adopted is that the person receiving more than 50% of the vote is elected. Runoffs will be scheduled until a candidate achieves that level. The number of candidates in the runoff will be determined by the ib rep. (see also previous mailing) 5) Fermilab will be hosting the d0 summer workshop from July 7-11, 1998. There was a call for volunteers to help organize this and think about what cachet to give the workshop. There was some sentiment that holding the meeting off-site, but close to Fermilab might be beneficial. Pheasant Run in St. Charles was suggested. 6) Computing for Fermilab physicists. The Dzero department has about $100K in CompDiv funds for support of physicists. In addition to our own physicists, Fermilab supports about 20 desktops for those collaborators who do not have the resources to support themselves adequately. The suggested expenditure of these funds is on desktop PCs, home PCs or Xterms and 'tmp' disk on Challenges (or local UNIX boxes). The typical costs are: 'top of line' PC: $2K cpu, $1.2K 21" monitor 'low end' PC: $1K cpu, $250 15" monitor 'home pc': either 'low end' or hand-me-down disk: ~$100 per GByte UNIX workstation (of reasonable size): $5-10K. A questionnaire will be distributed to everybody asking for their needs with respect to computing.
