Early in Run II the End Calorimeters were closed (May 2001).  They were opened (twice) during the Jan 2003 shutdown, and once again during the Fall 2003 shutdown.    By means of permanent monuments on the downstream faces of the EC vessels, the position of each of the calorimeters is measured by photogrammetric survey after each closeup. 
 
[When an end calorimeter is closed after being opened, it is pushed upstream along the centerbeam rails (while constrained in the E/W direction by a guideway) until the upstream rollers on the carriage of the vessel contact fixed z-stops on the centerbeam (actually the fixed carriage of the central calorimeter).  The end calorimeter is then "chocked" in this location by stiff bars lain on the downstream ends of the centerbeam rails which are wedged against the downstream rollers, and brackets fixed to the centerbeams.  By this means the "closed" position of the vessel is expected to be quite reproduceable.]
 
Below are tabulated the positions of the monuments on the two vessels, first for the May 2001 position, then after each of the Jan 03 closings, then before the recent opening and after the final closeup at the end of the fall 03 shutdown.
 
After the 5 separate measurements I calculate the standard deviation of each coordinate of each monument, and then the spread in values for each coordinate of each monument.
 
Evidently the calorimeters are repositioned to within a fraction of a millimeter each time.  The exceptional spread in the Z coordinate of ECN (~ 1.5 mm)  is essentially entirely driven by consistent offsets from the first measurement in May 2001 (when it wasn't closed so tightly?).  The spread in the Y coordinate for ECN is probably not physical but is likely generated by the fits to the centerbeam monuments in each survey campaign, which treats all coordinates on an equal footing).
 
In any event, please tell me if you agree that the data shows that it is not necessary to update the coordinates of the end calorimeters or the FPS as a function of time in RECO, thanks to the care of Russ and his team.
