I checked my files, and as I said this AM, for the solenoid, "forward" (=0 in the run database) means the field points south, in the proton direction.  "Reverse" (=1) is to the north.  
I looked at the Run Data base and the March Nikhef data, and see:

Can you think of a way to use the NIKHEF data to confirm the field direction?

For the Toroids, "forward" (also = 0 in the run database) orients the field in the direction Y into X.
