FNAL.GOV email address usage

All Fermilab computer users have a <username>@FNAL.GOV mail address. This address is guaranteed to be valid as long as Fermilab exists. The same statement cannot be made for any other mail address that you might have. It can make your life a lot easier when you need to change where you really read your mail.

The recommended usage of this mail address is to use it as your single official mail address, at least at Fermilab.

• Set your mailer to use it as your REPLY-TO: address in all correspondence.
• Use it as the address to which all mail lists (listserv and paper lists) send your mail.
• Set all accounts, except the one which you use to read your mail, to forward to your @FNAL.GOV address. On Unix create a ".forward" file in your home area with the single line being your @FNAL.GOV mail address.
• Set your @FNAL.GOV account to forward to where ever you actually read your mail (imapserver?.fnal.gov is a good choice for this).
• Make sure that that one destination does not forward.

When you move from reading on one machine to another, all you need to do is:

• remove the forwarding on the new machine,
• add forwarding on the old one and
• change the @FNAL.GOV forwarding.

If you use an IMAP server you won't even have to do that unless you switch to a different IMAP server.
