I went through some of the log books in the control room and one in particular "Calorimeter Electronics III" seemed to have some useful information in addition to the message Zarah sent out earlier. Here's a summary of what I think I found: There are notes from April 4, 1992 about shorts inside the cryostat which presumably is coded somewhere in a database or file etc, but just in case this information gets lost in the annals of history, I've recorded it below. All info is given in crate number and then ADC-BLS-TOWER-DEPTH Here is the crate mapping to refresh people's memories (0) 37 ECN-NW (11) 47 ECN-NE (1) 27 ECN-SW (10) 57 ECN-SE (2) 7 CC -NW (9) 17 CC -NE (3) 18 CC -SW (8) 8 CC -SE (4) 58 ECS-NW (7) 28 ECS-NE (5) 48 ECS-SW (6) 38 ECS-SE Crate 28 7-0-3-6 shorted to ground Crate 58 11-7-3-5 shorted 11-2-0-4 shorted 11-5-2-1 shorted 6-5-1-1 shorted to 8-1-0-1 ECS-NW is not faring well so far.... As a side note, I did find on May 15, 1994 a measurement of the distance of the muon chamber to the preamp platform south side E = 2.5" W =1.5" and to the top of the box E = 5.25" W=4.75". Don't know if that answers any current questions about muon pixels coexisting with our platforms. The recabling of the twist-and-flat 110-ohm with the 30-ohm began in June 1996 and was completed by Aug 15. There are some cables that were noticed to be badly seated and were redone during this process as well as some bent pins that were straightened. Some bad cables were found between the preamps and the BLS but most of these seem to have been rectified. What we are left with is some calibration runs taken in Oct 1996 with a note on Oct 16, 1996: TDR measurements -> following channels disconnected at feedthrough (bad cable) Crate 7 3-2-0-0 pbd 56 S4 E4 18 7-6-0-0 38 S26 E4 37 9-6-3-10 79 S14 E25 No other mention of these channels anywhere else The next entries are in Feb 1997, and I believe these are yours Zarah: Crate 48 1-3-0-10 had a problem but was checked with a TDR on April 28, 1997 and seemed fine i.e. no broken cable or pin after being reconnected. Crate 58 had suspicious readings from the calib run for 10-7-1-(9 to 11) After reconnecting, 9 and 11 were OK but 10 was still disconnected at the feedthrough end. Checking with the TDR at the feedthrough end showed the cable was fine therefore the conclusion was that there is a broken pin in the feedthrough board. Zarah's earlier e-mail mentioned that in her log book she has two more pins broken at the feedthrough end for crate 58: 10-7-3-9 10-7-1-10 <-- this one had a "?" attached to it so needs to be checked. Crate 58 (ECS-NW) is not faring at all well - with the known dead 5 channels due to internal shorts and at least 2 if not 3 others due to feedthrough port pins broken. What we are left with then, as far as I can ascertain, is three bad connections that might be fixable that were mentioned on Oct 16, 1996. All the others were either fixed (but not fully tested maybe) or were inside the cryostat. Does this seem to concur with people's recollections? Thanks Zarah for digging up these old bones... Leslie
