Procedure to Make a SAM Dataset from the DØ Data

Procedure to make a SAM dataset (also called SAM project) at the end of a shift, including a set of runs (say, all the good runs in a store, or all the runs for a particular condition like solenoid-off runs for alignment studies) --

[Instructions originally 01 July 2001 - maintained by Wyatt Merritt ]
[updated - 09 August 2001 - by Leslie Groer based on Heidi Schellman's instructions]

  1. Go to the SAM Dataset Definition editor at

    http://d0db.fnal.gov/sam_project_editor/DatasetEditor.html

[ I have made this a bookmark on the Captain's netscape personal toolbar, but this is not guaranteed to be stable against bored captains playing with Netscape, of course.]

  2. Click on 'Create New' from the menu on the left-hand side.

  3. Fill in the 5 boxes in the top section as follows:
    Definition Name
The standard name for raw data files from a shift (day, eve, owl) is
         shiftset-xxx-dd-mmm-yyyy
where xxx = day, eve or owl and the date format is 25-jul-2001
For example, for the day shift on July 25, 2001:
         shiftset-day-25-jul-2001
Note that these are hyphens "-" and not underscores and all lower case. If a second data set needs to be defined for the same shift, then append an "b", "c", "d", etc. to the subsequent definitions at the end of the year e.g.
         shiftset-day-25-jul-2001b
    Work Group
    dzero
    Username
    d0run
    Description
list of raw data runs for <day, eve, owl> shift for store <number>
    Keyword Usages
    shift-runset

  4. Use the Dimension Query box to define the data set: for example, if there were 3 good runs in the store, use the query
    RUN_NUMBER 123966,123969,123977
    Unfortunately, this IS case sensitive.

  5. Click the Translate Constraints button to see, in the white window below the button, exactly what files will be in the dataset, as you have defined it. If the list of files looks correct, click the Save button to (gasp) save the dataset.

An example session is shown below for a shift in August.
