Current Situation and Plans

  • Run Plan - Take the data with the v16 global trigger with all crates in readout during store. During the period between stores, run the zero bias trigger. Detector examines should be run at all times. Periods of quiet time greater than one hour should be used to take cosmics with all HV at full and recording turned ON.

  • We are currently pausing the run during shot setup (ramp and squeeze) to allow power cycling of some PDT power supplies.

  • Between stores, calorimeter pedestal calibrations should always be attempted, even if it appears there will not be sufficient time. It is almost always the case that the pedestals will be completed in time, and even if beam is injected the CALMUO shifters and experts can choose not to use those pedestals. The MCR should NOT be contacted to request quiet time for this procedure.

  • Logbook - Keep a good logbook. Include an explanation of any downtimes greater than 3 minutes.

  • Halo - After the shutdown the beam pipe vacuum is not as good which leads to higher halo rates. Prior to declaring a store the proton halo rates should be less than 13 kHz. Once a store is declared, the halo rates will go up as the luminosity high voltage is increased. If the final rates are greater than 20 kHz after the store has begun, contact MCR to see if the Halo rates can be reduced. If the rate becomes more than 45 kHz, contact the run coordinator.

  • Monitor stream - Currently a large fraction of our L3 rate is for a calibration trigger for luminosities < 100E30. Since this goes to the monitor stream, this stream will normally be greater than 20%. This is allowable.

  • Quiet time - Watch for possible quiet time. Page the Cal expert so that they can take their NLC runs. Page the SMT expert in case they would like to take scans. L1 Cal might also want to do calibrations. If there is remaining time, Cosmic runs should be taken. Quiet time should not be specifically requested without run coordinator approval.

  • Alarms - make sure shifters understand alarms for their detector.

  • All warning messages transmitted over the Fermilab emergency system are to be repeated by the captain over the D0 pager (x4674). This includes any weather warnings or watches.

  • Any configuration change of a system needs to be approved by the Run Coordinator.

  • Test Runs: All test runs that are taken during physics should be approved by the run coordinator. All starts and stops of test runs should be kept to a minimum. The DAQ shifter and captain should be informed before any start of a test run. Any test runs that interfere with data taking should be stopped.

  • The Shift Captain should follow the AD Run Coordinator and MCR e-logs and call MCR as needed to keep up with the schedule of the AD. MCR may give D0 quiet time or a Controlled Access. Get approval from the run coordinator before requesting a Controlled Access or quiet time. See the white board for Controlled Access requests (ask the Run Coordinator about approved work).
  • Please read the D0 Logbook before your shift in order to be better prepared.

Magnet Polarities

Magnet ramps must be approved by the Run Coordinator.

since Wednesday July 2, 2008:

   Solenoid = Reverse
   Toroid   = Forward

We will change polarities twice each month, normally when the magnets already need to be ramped down. This still requires run coordinator approval. The next change will be around 17 July. But this all depends on the running mode of the detector for the next two weeks. The next polarity set will be:

   Solenoid = Forward
   Toroid   = Reverse

Trigger Configuration

The default global trigger list is global_CMT-16.06.xml

For prescales, choose the prescale for the appropriate luminosity range.

Follow these guidelines when evaluating the accept rates:

  • The L1 rate should be below 1800 Hz at all luminosities.
  • The L2 rate should be below 850 Hz at all luminosities.
  • The L3 rate should be 100 Hz on average, and can go up to 150 Hz at the start of a store.
Page the Triggermeisters if:
  • Rates deviate from above guidelines.
  • The global FEB exceeds 10%.
  • The L3 rate drops below 20 Hz.

A good effort should be made to keep the global FEB rate below 7%.

Anytime the L3 disables are above 15%, change to the next higher prescale set.

Recorded Physics Run Limits:

  • Runs should be changed at the prescale set boundary, except:
    • the minimum length is 2 hours,
    • the maximum length is 4 hours.
  • Current prescale sets are found here

  • The prescale sets above 300E30 have draconian measures to reduce the trigger rates. Thus at the beginning of high luminosity stores, one hour run may be taken to avoid running with such prescales.

The DØ Shift Schedule (D0 Shift Calendar)

All Captain, DAQ and TRK shifts are 24/7.

Other shifters can be on-call:

  1. if there is no Store,
  2. if MCR states there is no shot setup expected for 4 or more hours,
  3. if the situation with the sub-detector is stable,
  4. if there are no sub-detector tasks to perform (checklist, calibration, special runs, monitoring), and
  5. if the Shift Captain is in agreement

CALMUON shifters need confirmation from the Calorimeter sub-detector coordinators before going on call. They should also follow these Special Instructions for the Muon sub-detector.

Shifters must report in with the Shift Captain to give a contact number before leaving.

Global Monitoring: Trigger & Physics Examines

Global Monitoring (GM) is now performed by the shift captain. Global Monitoring is being coordinated by Md Naimuddin and Elliot Cheu. The GM console, d0ol33, is reserved for the GM tasks during the colliding beam operations. Useful information, numbers and plots should be inserted into the electronic logbook under the GM tab.

The vertex examine runs automatically (currently on d0ol77) and the Shift Captain looks at the plots. Michiel Sanders has documented the Vertex Examine. For reference, look at the VE plots entered in the logbook during previous shifts.

Periods Without a Shot Setup or Colliding Beams

During non-colliding beam, the  zero_bias_4L1L2L3MP-1.01.xml  trigger should be run with all available crates to exercise the DAQ.

By default, 'Recording' should be OFF.

There are three trigger bits with prescales which have been tuned both to exercise the L1, L2 and L3 rates and to send an average of 1 Hz to tape, and a low rate L3 mark and pass trigger that writes to the monitor stream. The prescales should only be changed by or with approval of the triggermeisters.

If there is a request for cosmic ray data: the default cosmics trigger list is official/special/cosmics_run2b_MTM_L3-1.00.xml.
