Software Tools Minutes 20 July 1995 ====================== Present: Drew Baden, Krzystof Genser, Bruce Gibbard, John Hobbs, Al Jonchkeere, Stan Krzywdzinski, Qizhong Li-Demarteau, Laura Paterno, Serban Protopopescu, Harrison Prosper, Suemee Shin, Ransom Stephens Scribe: Suemee Shin Harrison called our second meeting to order with a mention of the agenda and the timescale(Oct. 1. 1995) in which the following had to be done. (A) Assigning jobs to names: The co-chair was chosen to be Qizhong Li-Demarteau. Al Jonchkeere took charge of Document/News management and John Hobbs took charge of text editing. A brief discussion of the responsiblities of each charge was held and decided. The co-chair will organize the meetings in the absence of Harrison. The Document/News manager will make available/collate the info created/edited by the text editing manager. A discussion of the software tools needed in managing the news/documents within D0 and also the accessability of such information through the UNIX WEB was held where the following was mentioned: - Latex 2 HTML (bugsy) - PS (Ghostview) - Text 2 HTML - Framemaker (output/converts to HTML) - Word (Word 2 HTML exist) - Word Perfect (Word Perfect 2 HTML) - Word Scientific Al mentioned the need for moderation needed in such postings and the following idea was spawn: SCRIPT(Latex...etc) <-> CAPTURED ACCOUNT(Manager) -> D0NOTES...etc (B) Discussion of Adam Para's comments: The following changes in low/high level software/tools to a UNIX system were discussed with Adam Para's comment in mind: - X-windows' IMAKE (builds applications, ports to 15 different platforms) - Careful purchasing of software (buy/steal/burrow, central/license, workable or not) - A fresh start in releasing software from the CMS library would be more efficient than rewriting the software (Alan) - Initially, use CMS for ease (John) - CVS (similar to CMS but with lower functionality, muti platforms) - RCVS (more features but not as flexible as CMS) - CMS to CVS, by other experiments - RHIC uses CVS (doesn't do distributions) - Zebra... - AFS (Local caching, some network problems, multi unix platforms, worldwide flag system, commercial product-licensing issue) - no CMZ - We can do releases to UNIX now - support/cooperation with FUE (Alan is the D0 representative) - Translation of porting (C) Discussion of Bruce Gibbard's notes: The discussion was cut short due to lack of time.
