Software Tools Meeting Minutes ============================== (26 January 1996) Present: Al Jonchkeere, Laura Paterno, Serban Protopopescu, Lee Lueking, Qizhong Li-Demarteau, Stan Krzywdzinski, Herb Greenlee Scribe: Qizhong Li-Demarteau Laura, who is coordinating the task for compiler/debugger, suggested that we discuss about the compiler/debugger requirements first before choosing any specific compiler/debugger. Discussions: - The C++ compiler should be able to handle the templates - Currently the C++ compilers differ on different platforms - Is there a C++ standard? - we should discuss it with C++ experienced people, like Dart etc - Fortran 90 has to compile (VAX) Fortran 77 - Alan pointed out that CERN has CFORTRAN, which uses C preprocessor to preprocess FORTRAN code - ... Then we discussed on the code management. Herb suggested that we should have separated system for run I and run II. Serban agrees that we should have a clear break for run I and run II code and should have two groups people to manage them. Herb pointed out that the software tool group should have the recommendation out now, because a new group is formed for run II software tools. Alan pointed out that CVS does not has much better features than CMS, the main problem is not manage the source code in CVS or CMS, the main problem is how to distribute them. The system we have now works fine. To change to a new system will need a lot of manpower, for which it seems not really possible. (Qizhong's note: According to what Paul Grannis and Waytt told me, the new groups for run II software do not conflict with our software tool group's work. In D0NEWS, general folder #4065, "Run II Software Organization" it clearly indicated that "The Software Tools group will continue to work toward the recommendations remaining in its charge: Compilers/Debuggers Code Mananagement Databases GUI building/editing")
