Much of the daily work of DØ collaborators involves text processing. Text processing plays a role in source code development, writing internal documentation, composing news items, writing papers and conversing with collaborators via electronic mail.

The wide-spread use of new technologies--especially HTML and postscript--in document presentation has somewhat reduced the need for standardization. However, a common environment has the virtue that it encourages a uniform style for documents. Technologies, such as HTML and postscript, are intended to aid the presentation and distribution of documents, but are not natural environments for producing and maintaining documents or computer source code in a standard manner. It is thus essential that a robust, standardized tool be provided for basic text processing.
