Title: Maximal use of kinematic information in single-lepton t tbar events. Link to paper if available: Session of First Preference: Heavy Flavor Session of Second Preference: Test of the Standard Model LP Session: Hadron Machines Abstract: We present a method of analysis that makes maximal use of all kinematic information in collider events, and thereby maximizes the discrimination between signal and background. The technique involves a direct comparison of matrix elements for signal and background. We apply the method to t tbar -> lepton+jets production, and specifically to the extraction of the mass of the top quark. Compared to previous techniques, we note a significant reduction in the statistical uncertainty on the extracted mass. Submitted: 9 April 2001
