Studies of Discovery Reach for Higgs Bosons in Run-2 at the Tevatron

Pushpalatha Bhat, Russell Gilmartin, Harrison Prosper

We are exploring the possible discovery reach for Standard Model Higgs boson and SUSY Higgs bosons in Run 2 of the Tevatron, using Monte Carlo models of the signal and background. At the present time, we are investigating the assoicated production WH and ZH in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)= 2 TeV. We are using PYTHIA Monte Carlo program to model the signal production from 90 GeV/c**2 to 140 GeV/c**2. We use COMPHEP for generating Wbb, Zbb (with PYTHIA as the fragmenter of partons) and PYTHIA to generate other backgrounds such as WW, WZ, ZZ, W+jets, ttbar and single top backgrounds . The detector simulation is implemented only by smearing the electromagnetic and hadron energy measurements as per the observed resolutions in the DØ detector. Our aim is to employ multivariate techniques for signal/background discrimination, compare with standard univariate cuts and combine the WH and ZH channels to extract the minimum luminosity required for a 5sigma discovery at various Higgs boson masses. We plan to map the results on to {tan(beta), m_h} plane for some SUSY model assumptions.
