Adelbert Jakeman, Poet


     Of tides and winds and pines he wrote
     Of gulls and summer sands,
     The pounding surf a deep bass note,
     Nor dreamed of far-off lands
     The poet sang of ocean's foam
     Of damp sea-spray and marshgrass tall
     And sparkling blue skies over all
     He loved his year-round seaside home
     And driftwood smoke from chimneys too
     At Ocean Park in Maine
     And quiet days of fog and rain
     With sunlight shining through.

 
 
     Note: Adelbert Jakeman co-founded the State of Maine Writer's Conference
           in 1941.  Bates presented him with honorary Doc. of Letters in 
           1982. Fancy that.
