Progress Report from the Mechanical/Shield Group Feb 5, 2003 * We started regular meetings this morning. The next is Feb. 19th at 9:00 AM in Tech. Div. Trailer 157 Meeting Room. * Goal: Investigating Deliverables: Multifunction particle/thermal/stray-light shield Mechanical supports and anchors for the optical bench * Shield and Cold Plate Engineering and Integration Plans: Import the SNAP satellite integration model Clark Reid is doing it. A simple 3D model has been imported from LBL. In order to import a more detailed model LBL has to remake their computer files. He has produced 2D drawings of some shielding components. Investigate technical specifications to make a preliminary look at constraints for the shielding model. Start a CAD model. Investigate options for the Dewar (the space enclosed by the conical shield and cold plate) and begin hte thermal model. * Shielding Simulation Plans: Simulate charged particle transport using MARS and Geant so as to determine options for shielding. Fritz Dejongh is leading this subgroup. Nikolai Mokhov is now on a NASA commitee of experts in radiation shielding. Igor Rakhno is starting a MARS model based on the information provided by Clark. Develop concepts for the mechanical design/shape of the radiation shield, including shielding from the direction of the cold plate. Investigate the effect of the particle radiation on the cold plate images.
