Mucousitis

Mucousitis----- canker sores that infect the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach lining and entire intestinal tract. The severity can vary. Brian usually gets it very bad. This particular time, it does not seem as severe as usual for him, but it is hard to tell unless it is viewed with a scope. We judge by what we can see in his mouth and on his lips. The skin sloughs off and the areas are very red and inflamed. This is a common (and horrible) side effect of the chemo.

Mucousitis creates pain for Brian that is controlled with morphine. When he vomits, tissue comes out. It takes 7-10 days after the tissue starts to shed for a new tract lining of healthy cells to form.
