Subject: Brian's weekend at home. Sunday evening, 11 January Dear Friends and Family, What a difference 48 hours at home can make! We could never have imagined such remarkable progress. We, as adults, know how crucial friendships are in a time of crisis. We have learned that this is also true of children. The remedy for Brian's depression came in the form of his 4 year old friend, Garreth. Garreth did what no one else could do. He came Saturday afternoon and made Brian smile, laugh and eventually sit up and play cars! They played cars on the family room carpet for an hour! Denny and I went to Santa Rosa this afternoon and were amazed to find Brian sitting up and tossing a ball into a basketball hoop on the carpet near him. Surrounded by cars, he and Garreth played and made a lot of noise. Wonderful sound of children at play! The adult noises in the room didn't bother Brian like they had been. He ate for the first time today---some bagel, pretzels and crackers. Good to see him developing an interest in food. Sara has to feed him 24 hours a day through the NG feeding tube. She has the amount up to 50. Desired amount is 90. He is not able to walk yet, but sitting is a great start. He is attached to the IV pole all the time. Playing tired him quickly. He was asleep by the end of the 49er's game. He managed to sleep through the yelling of Stan, Rick and Denny who were convinced that they should have been coaching the 49er''s. The secret weapon---Garreth---is scheduled to return to play tomorrow. Wow! The power of friendship and prayers! Prayers have been answered. The Warne family has experienced a happy weekend together. Sara and Stan got to go to church this morning for the first time since early Dec. They were blessed by the service and returned home refreshed by the words of Jesus presented in Rick's message. The heavy rains will keep Stan home from work tomorrow. They return to S.F. Tuesday morning. One week of chemo will start on Tuesday. They probably face 3 weeks in the hospital. We learned a lot during the last chemo experience; so we feel that this time we may be able to do a better job relieving his pain. They will still have the room at Family House when they return to S.F. The Pediatric Oncology Dept. move to the new wing has been postponed again. Was suppose to happen Fall '97---new date is Jan. 20th. Unfortunately, this probably means that Brian will be in a double room on Tuesday. Please pray for Stan and Sara to get enough sleep to keep up their strength during the long days of chemo. And pray that Brian's pain can be relieved this time. Love, Susan
