Subject: Brian Update, 2/1/98 Dear Friends and Family, Saturday was a quiet, peaceful day for Brian. He enjoyed reading books, watching videos & coloring with Steven. His blood counts are up & he is beginning to feel good physically. Brian told me, "I feel sad. I only can cry, and talk and watch TV. That's all. I miss my friends." Stan woke up with food poisoning from his dinner out with the group Friday night. He felt awful. He spent the day at Happy House sleeping - woke up Sunday and felt fine. Sue & Rick Hahn ( pastor of Sebastapol Covenant Church) came to visit. Rick read from Matthew & served communion to Stan, Sara, Denny, Susan, Don, Thelma and Sue. This was a reflective time for us; helped us remember that we are all safely in God's hands. Sara and Steven went swimming at the Recreation Facility adjacent to the hospital. Sunday: Wow! Brian was Mr. Energy today! Why? Garreth came from 10:00 to 3:00 and the two of them had a wild time! They played in the playroom; road tricycles at record speeds down the hallway (Stan ran into a food cart with the IV while struggling to keep up with them); laid in Brian's bed and kicked balloons and laughed and giggled noisily. Sara, Stan, Susan, Denny, Don & Thelma (grandparents) ate lunch together across the street from the hospital. Sara and Stan then left to go home to Santa Rosa to get "dressed up" for the Dan Fogelberg concert tonight. Don & Thelma said their goodbyes and left for their hotel. They fly back to North Carolina tomorrow morning. Susan and Denny spent the rest of Sunday with Brian. Denny is typing this into the computer while Susan spends Sunday night with Brian. Brian is still on a 1.0 mg of morphine per hour, liquids and antibiotics. He has not had a fever or pain this weekend. His test results came back with good news. The chemo is working. The tumors are shrinking. He will be randomized this week, and we will be told in which of 2 arms in the research projec that he will participate. Brian says, " I miss my teacher, (Miss Sally).Garreth played with me. We played cars. We went around and around really fast on Tricycles. It is wonderful to see Brian having fun before he starts chemo again. Pray that he keeps his spirits up during this long stretch in the hospital. Pray for wisdom for the doctors and nurses at UCSF as they care for these sick children. Love, Susan
