Subject: Chemo round number 8 Friday morning, June 12, 1998 Dear Friends and Family, Brian was in the out-patient clinic at UCSF from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. It was a long day for him. During that time he received 6 hours of chemo. He started the first of 8 days of prednisone. It did not take long for that medication to take effect and start changing his personality. Prednisone causes him to lose reason and become demanding and difficult. Trying to keep Brian entertained and calm for all those hours while sitting in a chair was quite a challenge for Sara. She called last night before they went out for a late dinner. She was very tired. The family is slept at Happy House Wed. and Thurs. night. Chemo was scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. today---again for 6 hours. They hope to finish up earlier today. Brian's blood counts did not come up like they usually do. 3 weeks after the last chemo (last Wed.) his counts were only 1500--they are usually up to 4000 or more by then. So he started this chemo round with low counts. I don't know how this will effect his time frame for becoming neutrapenic. The Warnes will be heading home today. Brian will be able to stay home until his counts fall and he develops a fever. The family is excited about the visit today of Stan's sister, Jane. Jane and her family (including a new baby!) are flying in today from N.J. A family reunion is planned for this weekend. Brian is getting stronger everyday. He runs and plays and his life is becoming more normal. We feel like we are watching a miracle. Our Heavenly Father has blessed us with many joys in our lives during these past weeks.. Thank you for your prayers. A special thank you to the "Relay for Life" walkers in the recent Alameda Cancer fund raiser for cancer. This group raised over $39,000 for cancer research. The 2 teams from Immanuel Lutheran Church (my church family) carried shells during their walk. Each shell had names of people who have faced cancer. Some have survived and some have died. Brian will be given the shell that bore his name. Brian was still in isolation during the walk this May. Harrison (an Alameda Burkitt's survivor--age 11 now) attended this event with his family. We had hoped that Brian could walk with him in the survivor's lap. The Warne family plans to participate in the walk next year. Love, Susan
